Mungret St. Pauls 2-6 Monaleen 2-10
On a sunny Saturday, 7 September in the LIT Gaelic Grounds the first of the U-14 hurling Semi Finals took place with Mungret St. Pauls and Monaleen. These 2 teams have met many times over the years and they have always had a strong game, this was no exception. Mungret St. Pauls were first to point but Monaleen did not wait long to match the score and take a 3 point lead in the first 10 minutes. A pointed free got Mungret St. Pauls back into the game but silly fouls gave Monaleen their next 3 points. In the sixteenth minute there was a run from the middle of the field dropped into the Monaleens square after a scramble on the goal line the ball was helped over the goal line, bringing Mungret St. Pauls back into the game they followed it up with another 2 points to level the game. Another chance for Mungret St. Pauls resulted in their second goal and first lead in the game. There was some great team work from Mungret St. Pauls but no results came from it. Just before half time Monaleen put pressure on our backs as they went for their own goal which was brilliantly denied only for the rebound to be knocked into the net to level the game as they teams split for half time.
The second half had a slow start as both sides had most of their scores in the first 25 minutes, there was a lot of play on the field with the ball going both ends with no scores. Both sides eventually pointed a ball each before Monaleen struck again and hit the net. The pressure was kept on our backs but nothing resulted as our goalie rescued the ball again. With 3 minutes left on the clock Monaleen edged ahead again with a pointed free, Monaleen were trying to hammer in goals but each had the hurley of our goalie there to stop it. The game ended with both sides pointing one last ball each, Monaleen took the place in the Final. This was a testing game for our players as they were attacked on every move they made, they will learn from this and bring it with them to next year when they are U-15.
