Referees Wanted
The referees Administration Committee for Limerick are appealing to all clubs to start actively recruiting new referees, the numbers of whom are falling to a level that may give rise to difficulties in getting matches scheduled and completed. Anyone in the club who is interested should contact Kevin O'Hagan.

Newsletter
The photo shows Limerick hurlers Donal O'Grady, Paul Browne and Paudie O'Brien all enjoying the recently launched Mungret newsletter. We have delivered to over 5000 houses in the area. If you have not received yours you can get a copy from the club shop open Saturday morning 11.30am to 12.30pm. A big thank you to the club members who helped with the distribution.

Ryan's Centra
Mungret St Pauls are delighted to welcome Ryan's Centra (beside the SouthCourt Hotel) as a sponsor to the club. Part of the agreement includes an option for shoppers to donate their Centra loyalty points to Mungret. New signs have appeared around the club pitch looking for your points. Special Centra Key fobs are available from Ryan's Centra or you can also get them in the club shop open Saturday morning 11.30am to 12.30pm. You simply fill in the form and you receive your key fob straight away. For every €1 you spend in Centra they will double the points for the club from 1 to 2 points. This is a great way of supporting a local business and the club at the same time.

Foundation course
Our foundation course took place last Friday night and Saturday Morning. There was a great attendance. We welcome the new coaches onboard. If you are interested in becoming a coach please contact one of the members of coaching and games or Kevin O'Hagan. Also the next Child Welfare Course will take place on the 22nd of March from 7pm to 10pm. Names to be given to Trish Barry.

Patricks Day
We are assembling a group of players to walk in the Patricks day Parade again this year. It is always a great turn out on the day. Coaches will be given details to pass on closer to the day. Plans are under way for the after party in the club house as last years party was such a success. There will be food available and plenty of drink. We will keep you updated.

U11/U12 Hurling
The first match into 2013 saw our under 11 and under 12 hurlers out to UL against Ahane. The
pitch was divided in half and the two matches went on at the same time. The under 12s found
themselves up against a strong Ahane team, Stephen Cotter Gleason put the first score on the
board but we were subsequently dominated by Ahane, though not from the want of trying. Daragh Hernan had a great game in defence, and Patrick Dwane in goals pulled off some great stops. The under 11s had a more even sided game. They had a great show of skill and team work with Liam Lynch scoring a hat trick of goals and points. Our defence of Conor Galvin, Ciaran Kenny, Eamonn Flahive and Conor O'Malley worked like a well oiled machine. There was great effort put in in both teams, who could both find themselves really going places if they keep up the good work at training. The U12 team was; Tom Bolger, Stephen Cotter Gleason, Sean O'Riordan, Patrick Dwane, Jake Connolly, Darragh Ryan, Darragh Hernan, Peter Fahy, Sean Fitzgibbon, Ben O'Sullivan, Jack Moroney, Cian O'Connor, Darragh O'Shea. The U11 team was; Cathal Joy, Darragh O'Hagan, Ciaran Kenny, Conor O'Halloran, Keith McKeogh, Dermot Maloney, Liam Lynch, Conor Galvin, Brian O'Meara, Barry Duff, Eamonn Flahive, Conor O'Malley, Tom Morrison, Conor Murtagh.

Senior Club
Our own Pa Begley, Munster U21 Championship winner with Limerick in 2011, last appeared in the Limerick colours in the All-Ireland semi-final of that competition against Galway. He looked an outstanding prospect to graduate to senior even then, and it's great to see that he has made the Limerick senior panel for 2013. There was further good news for the club with Brendan Giltenane and Greg Murray making the county football panel. We wish all three of these players the very best of luck with Limerick.

Best wishes
We'd like to send our best wishes to Carmel Browne after her recent hospital stay. Though Donie is rumoured to be doing a fine job running the household, he is only holding the fort temporarily and has no long-term ambitions for the role!

Ladies Football.
Our U14s will continue to train at the sand based pitch on Saturdays at 12:15. The U16, Minor and Senior Training will resume on Monday 11th February at 6:30 in the Village pitch (up the side road by the church). Our U8s, U10s and U12s will resume training next Saturday 16th of February at 11:00 also at the Village pitch. New players are always welcome so girls interested in playing ladies football of any age should talk to any of the coaches at the training sessions.

Monthly Meeting
There will be an open information meeting of club members on Monday 18th February in the lounge. it is planned to hold these meetings on a monthly basis going forward.

Feile
This is a big year for underage GAA in Limerick, which is the host county for Feile na nGael in 2013. This is the third time that Limerick has hosted this event, which has been running since 1971. The training and planning for this event is underway at county and club level, which will involve up to 25,000 visiting players being hosted throughout the county. Limerick teams have won division one of the hurling competition on three occasions, with two further division 1 wins in camogie. Indeed, Mungret camogie club did not exist when Feile was previously hosted in Limerick, so this promises to be a historic year for the girls. Look out for further communications regarding Mungret's participation in Feile 2013.

Gear Bags
An order is being placed for Gear bags. If you want to get your order in please put your name down in the club shop open Saturday morning 11.30am to 12.30pm, where a sample is available to be seen. The bag does come in 2 sizes; juvenile size is €30, while the senior size price is expected to be €35, though this latter price is subject to confirmation. we will not be ordering again for six months, so this is your chance to get your hands on a classy kit bag with your own name printed on it.

10K Run
We hope you have all brushed off the runners and have started to get back into the training for the Mungret St Pauls 10k which is taking place on the 19th of May. Register on line at www.mungretstpauls10k.com . Members trophy there for the winning, and many more prizes for participants. Keep an eye on the website and on facebook for updates.

Lotto
Whatever about upcoming events at the Vatican, there was white smoke billowing from the clubhouse chimney on Monday as Mary Hogan drew the numbers 1, 6, 10 and 18 which earned her the €6,600 jackpot, the first win of 2013. Well done to Mary, the jackpot reverts to €2,000 next week.

15/01/2013
One feature of Belfast school life that Raymond particularly enjoyed was taking the children on the five minute walk down the road from school to the Falls Road Baths, where they practiced swimming. Realising that his pupils in Mungret would hugely benefit from this, he organised for swimming trips to Roxboro pool which later became part of the physical education charter for every pupil in Mungret and, eventually, in all the schools in Limerick. So the next time your child is getting on the bus to go swimming from school, you have Raymond to thank for it.

After retirement, Raymond spent many years supervising the teaching practice activities of the students at Mary Immaculate Teacher Training College, continuing his efforts at nurturing and developing young talent, be it on the playing field or in the classroom. He continues to attend countless matches all around the country, and is one of very few GAA men that attended this year’s all-Ireland hurling final replay having also attended the previous replay in 1959. He also witnessed Kilkenny’s defeat to Antrim in Corrigan Parkin the 1943 semi-final, as well as Antrim’s defeat to Kerry in the 1946 football semi-final. Interestingly, whereas Kerry are closely associated nowadays with the quick hand-passing game, Raymond fondly recalls the lightning-quick hand-passing of Antrim in the 1940s, and the no-nonsense approach taken by Kerry back then to stop them.

Reflecting on his careers within the education system and the GAA, he is firmly of the belief that the school should act as a breeding ground for the club, and he underlines the importance of parents attending school matches and supporting the school and club teams. If anything, he regards Mungret St.Pauls as being disadvantaged geographically, given the club’s location on the edge of the catchment area, rather than at the centre. He would love to survey the inhabitants of Raheen to find out how many of the residents do not know where the GAA pitch is located!

The O’Hagan name remains to the fore in Mungret St. Pauls GAA club. Raymond’s son Eoin is a member
of the junior football team, while another son Kevin is currently the club chairman and his son Eamonn is a selector with the U21, Junior and Intermediate Footballers. Raymond’s grandchildren Darragh and Eoin are prominent dual players at U10 and U8 age groups respectively, while two other grandchildren, John & Jenny Togher currently play with the U21 footballers and the Ladies football teams respectively.

Raymond has left a deep impression on the club and community, of which he remains an active member, and everyone in Mungret is grateful for the contribution he has given in a lifetime of service to school, club and community.

15/01/2013
Raymond and Anne settled down in St Theresa’s parish, where there was no GAA club at the time. Resolving to do something about this he approached a local Christian Brother’s school, who gave him their full backing, and shortly afterwards St Theresa’s was founded. Two notable personalities who provided great support were Derrymen Jim McKeever and Phil Stuart, who formed the midfield partnership for Derry in the 1958 All-Ireland Football Final against Dublin. In fact, Phil Stuart lodged with the O’Hagan family before getting married himself. By 1963 St Theresa’s was fully up and running as a dual club and continues to thrive to this day, reaching their highpoint in 1979 with victory in the Antrim Senior Football Championship, a match Raymond missed because he was carrying out official duties in Limerick for the visit of Pope John Paul II. Raymond served as vice-Chairman of the Antrim Hurling Board in the second half of the sixties, and was well versed in GAA administration by the time he moved to Limerick.

The Limerick connection started when Raymond and Anne began to holiday in the area through family connections. Raymond, liking what he saw, began to make inquiries and to make friends during his visits. A meeting in Limerick in 1974 with Gerry Tierney, principal of St Patricks on the Dublin Road, proved fruitful, and this eventually led to a job offer, which Raymond accepted before Gerry Tierney could draw another breath. There were some formalities to observe before the offer could be made permanent, particularly around the fact that Irish was not Raymond’s strong point! Showing a typical doggedness and persistence, he set this to rights with an extended stay in the Gaeltacht of Corca Dhuibhne, and the official offer of permanent employment was made in time for the start of the 1974 school year. In fact, Raymond travelled to Limerick to begin his new life in 1974 on the very day that Limerick were being beaten by Kilkenny at Croke Park in the All-Ireland hurling final. He had also been present a year earlier at the’73’ final when he watched Eamon Grimes raise the Liam McCarthy Cup. Little did he realise on that great September day that he would soon become a staunch Limerick GAA man. After two years in St Patricks he made the move to St Nessans in Mungret, where he remained as headmaster for the next 17 years.

This was an all-consuming task, which called on him to manage the improvement of the physical
resources of the school, which needed to cater for the booming suburbs around Raheen. He recalls difficult days finding pre-fab units from wherever he could, including from The Model School after it was rebuilt in 1986. But the games were still important, and one of the very first things he was asked by the school board upon his appointment was whether he had any interest in supporting the GAA locally. The school board were obviously pushing an open door here, and Raymond ended up serving several stints as secretary and chairman of the juvenile and senior clubs in Mungret. He also went on to mentor and manage many juvenile and adult teams over the years and was even called on to line out in the red and white as fifteenth man on a few occasions. When he joined, the crest on the club jersey said "Mungret Hurling Club," and the fact that there are now literally hundreds of children playing Gaelic Football in Mungret St. Pauls is due in no small part to Raymond's influence. He also held the position of Limerick senior football manager between 1983 and 1987, the highlight of which was Limerick’s extended run in the Centenary Cup of 1984, which featured home wins against Derry and Mayo, the respective Ulster and Connaught champions at the time. They eventually lost out to Cork in the quarter final, but even then only to a late score. However Limerick did achieve some success during Raymond’s tenure by winning won a McGrath Cup. Raymond also served as a selector on the Railway Cup team for Munster in 1987, which featured a host of Limerickmen and who defeated Ulster to get to the final, where they lost out to Leinster.

Raymond O'Hagan
We mentioned last week that the Limerick GAA yearbook for 2012 contains a profile of Raymond O'Hagan. In case you have not had a chance to check it out, we reproduce it below.

Former Mungret St Pauls club chairman Raymond O’Hagan has been an ever-present in the Mungret
community since joining St Nessan’s school as headmaster in 1976. From then right up to the present day he has made his presence felt in school, club and community as a contributor and as a leader. A Belfast native, he was born into a family with strong GAA links. Raymond’s uncle Sean McKeown, who was the GAA correspondent for the Irish News for many years, played hurling for Antrim from 1908 right through to 1936. This staggering twenty-eight year career, which yielded 17 Ulster Hurling Championship medals, is reckoned to be the longest ever served in the inter-county arena. Raymond is the proud possessor of Sean’s Ulster Championship winning medal from 1931, the year Raymond was born.

As a youngster he played for the Eire Og club for whom he usually lined out at wing back in hurling and football. Soccer was a big distraction back then, and every Saturday was devoted to Belfast Celtic soccer club, while Sunday was reserved for GAA matches at Corrigan Park. He continued his playing career during his years as a clerical student in Kilteegan Co Wicklow, where he played with many illustrious players, including Sean Lovett of Kilmoyley, in whose honour the cup for the Kerry Minor Hurling Championship is named. Raymond left Kilteegan in 1953 and returned to Belfast, and for a few years had little involvement in sports. He spent a year in St Josephs in Belfast training as a teacher, after which he took up a position as a primary teacher in the school he attended as a child, St Congall’s. His life at the time centred around The Legion of Mary, through which he met his wife Anne, who, in her own words, “Didn’t like him at all when I first met him!” This was no obstacle to Raymond, and they were married in 1958, and now have their own “sevens” squad, namely Deirdre, Bronagh, Maeve, Pearse, Kevin, Eamonn and Eoin. Furthermore, they are now looking forward to their 55th wedding anniversary next year, at which fifteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren will be expected!
