Fitness The annual Croagh Patrick Climb takes place on the 3rd March at 11am, further information is available on the website. The Fit4All club is going gangbusters at the moment, with the recently introduced 8pm sessions for beginners proving to be a huge hit. The boot camp sessions run on Tuesday and Thursday nights, the first session is at 7pm and is geared towards those who have a little more experience, while if you are just starting out you should begin with the 8pm sessions. Both last for one hour. The charge is 3 per session, no sign-up fee, no obligation. The feedback from these sessions has been fantastic so far, and we would encourage everyone to get involved. Keep in mind the Osteofit classes as well, which are geared towards men and women over 55. The class aims to maintain bone density, improve strength and flexibility, improve balance and reduce risk of falling. Classes cost 8 per class and your first class is FREE. OSTEOFIT is on Mondays at the new time of 12 o clock in Mungret GAA Hall. Newcomers welcome. Contact Brenda 087 2255676.
Committees All members across all sections are asked to note that every committee in the club is in the process of getting together for their first meetings of the year. The PR committee, for example, meets on Tuesday nights towards the end of the month, the 10K committee is meeting every second Monday night and the club management committee meets on the second Wednesday of every month. If you, as a member, have any issue of any description that you want aired, or better still, have any ideas you want to bring to the club, please seek out a member of one of these committees, who will be glad to present it to their respective meetings. In particular, note that James O'Doherty will be speaking to many of these committees in the coming weeks in his capacity as player retention officer. As a club, we would collectively love to do something to arrest the decline in the numbers playing our sports that we consistently experience as players advance through their teenage years, and we are interested in hearing any ideas that anyone has which may help in reversing this trend. |

Juvenile Club Juvenile club training is almost back to full swing. Under 6 hurling is back at 12pm on Sunday mornings. Under 6 and Under 8 football is up and running again at 11am on Saturday mornings, with almost sixty kids being put through their paces last Saturday. Under 10 hurling is taking place at St Clements at 7pm for the next few weeks, followed at 8pm by under 12 hurling at the same location. Under 10 footballers should enjoy the couple of weeks extra rest, as the head coach tells me that he has a demonic schedule of training in store for the resumption.

There was no winner, while the lucky dip winners were Thomas Hogan, Rita Cotter, Ann Kiely, Phyllis Kelly, Keith McKeogh, John Furey, TB O’Connell, Claire Doolan, Meave Togher and Phil Roche. | 16/01/2012 | We then had the treasurers report from Brian Culhane. This was Brian’s last outing delivering this report, and the wealth of detail and information he provided leaves no doubt that he will be a hard act to follow. He thanked all the volunteers who helped with fundraising, and his report makes clear just how dependent we are on activities like bag packing, club registrations, sponsored walks and the energiser disco. Brian is in the happy position of leaving the club finances in a healthier position than prevailed when he took up the reins three years ago, and on behalf of everyone in the juvenile club we would like to thank him for his work over the years.
We then had the chairman’s address from John Beatty. He delivered a wide-ranging and comprehensive report which named and thanked a huge number of people who supported us in different ways in 2012. This highlighted just how many shoulders we have to the wheel in this club. John expressed particular thanks to the senior players who helped out with underage coaching in 2011. He appealed for more people to get involved with the club, and pointed out the various sub-committees that are available for anyone to join. He expressed sympathy on behalf of the club to all members who lost loved ones in 2011, and finished by sending best wishes to Stephen Cahill as he recovers from illness.
On the election of officers, John Beatty remains as chairman, Mike Joy as secretary, John O’Donovan as assistant secretary, Clodagh O’Brien as PRO and Dermot Flahive as vice chairman. The subsequent passing of a motion to have the vice-chairman automatically nominated as our county board rep was passed, thus Dermot continues in this role also. Brendan Ryan succeeds Brian Culhane as treasurer, and we wish Brendan every success. We also have a change of registrar, as Geraldine Dee has decided to step aside after many years of service in this position. This is sometimes a frustrating and difficult job, and Geraldine performed heroics over the years and gave up a lot of time to attend training sessions and to do whatever was necessary to complete our registrations, which are critically important from the point of view of insurance. Thanks to her for all her hard work in this regard, and good luck to her in her new role as energiser committee rep to the finance committee. In her stead as registrar we are delighted to welcome back Eugene King, who is a former juvenile club chairman. Seanie Barry and Albert O’Grady continue as juvenile club hurling reps to the Coaching and Games committee. The football reps will be Fintan Hynes and Mick Fitzgibbon. Donie Brown continues as purchasing officer, and Seamus Hayes continues as juvenile pitch co-ordinator. Brian Lynch continues as juvenile club rep to the facilities committee. Finally, the proposed coaching staffs for 2012 for all squads were proposed and approved.
The meeting finished with a brief address from incoming chairman Kevin O’Hagan, where he looked forward to the year ahead and in particular to the challenge of translating our huge player base into an effective and competitive set of teams that can challenge again for silverware at all the ages where we compete. We were left in no doubt about the will and intent to improve as a club, to tie all the various sections together as one club, and to put in place the structures we need to help players to smoothly transition through the age groups. Thanks to everyone who took the time to attend the AGM.
Lotto The lotto committee have been demonstrating increased nervousness lately, with the surrender of two jackpot payments in recent weeks severely deplenishing the normally well-stocked coffers. However we seem to be settling back to normal service as of the 9 January draw, where the numbers drawn were 9, 17, 20 and 21, with N.Winner taking home the proceeds once again. The Lucky Dips Winners were Sean Blake, Aising Slevin, Jim Doran Fedamore, Kieran Moran, Jim Cronan Fedamore, Rian & Kathleen Murphy, Ciara O’Flynn, Mike O’Dwyer Jr, John Rice and Catherine Reynolds. Congrats to these lucky dip winners, and the club will be hoping for as many such winners as possible in 2012. The draw on 16 Jan will be for €2,200. |
| 16/01/2012 Club Notes 16 Jan 2012 | The AGM of the juvenile club was held on Sunday 15 January in the clubhouse at 6pm. Chairman John Beatty called the meeting to order, and invited secretary Mike Joy to deliver his report for the year. Mike pointed out that this was the 44th AGM of the juvenile club, and that we were continuing a long tradition. He started by highlighting again the re-invigoration of the club that has occurred as a result of the 5-year plan, and thanked Donal Fitzgibbon and Eibhear O’Dea for their critical roles in driving this forward. We heard an update on how we fared in 2011 against the key objectives we had set ourselves at the start of the year, namely better support for players, the development of skills, internal communications, better relationships with the schools, improved player retention, setup of the club shop, maintaining our finances, and improving our on-field performances. The message here is that we have achieved much, and have much yet to do. We now have over 300 registered players, and 200 from under 6 to under 10, which bodes very well for our future. Many of these players participated in our August Cul Camp, and the coaches from that camp commented specifically on the high skill levels of our players. We would like to thank Ger Downes, the Limerick U21 players and all the other volunteers who supported this camp. The challenge now is to keep developing these players as the get older. We also succeeded in establishing contact with several clubs outside the county, which greatly broadens our options for arranging challenge matches, and our teams made several away trips in 2011, to places like Douglas, Nemo Rangers, Mallow, Fermoy, Shannon, Clarecastle, Toomevara, Malahide, Croke Park and Doora-Barefield, to name a few. These trips are great adventures for our young players, who get the chance to improve as players, to see new places, and to form closer bonds with each other.
On the administrative side, the juvenile sub-committee met 22 times during the year, and 920 items of correspondence to the club secretary were dealt with. The minutes of all these meetings are available to any member who is interested in reading them. We also regularly attended the county Bord Na nOg meetings, and we feel that our continued good relationship with this body is crucial as we try to influence competition structures to provide more opportunities for our players, especially at the under 13 and under 15 age groups. Particular mention was made of our excellent working relationship with the county Bord Na nOg secretary, for whose support we are extremely grateful.
The work of the schools liaision officers is particularly critical, and we are able to report that we are getting good support from the Crescent Comprehensive in our efforts to promote our activities to the pupils of this school. Thanks and well done to John Beatty and Kevin O’Hagan for driving this forward. Kevin is also our contact with St Nessans primary school, who along with Wanda Hayes, Brian Kelly and Theresa Fitzgerald are keeping our profile well up in St Pauls, Gaelscoil Raithin and Educate Together respectively. Note that Kevin O’Hagan is not in fact able to do everything, contrary to popular belief, and he will be handing over to Trish Barry as St Nessans Schools Liaision officer for 2012. Best of luck to Trish with this new appointment, which she takes up along with her new role as club child protection officer. Note that Trish’s brief in this latter capacity covers ladies football and camogie as well.
Mike then read out a series of detailed reports from our sixteen different underage squads across hurling and football from under 6 to under 16. Highlights from this were the phenomenal numbers attending under 8 football, the surge in numbers during the year for under 10 hurling, from 22 to 59 players, our U14 hurlers reaching the county semi-final, our under 10 and under 12 footballers travelling to Croke Park, our under 13 footballers reaching the county final, and our under 11 footballers going through the whole year unbeaten. One lowlight was the disappointing attendances at training for some of the squads, and we will investigate to see if we can improve this situation next year. Mike finished by thanking the PR committee, the energiser committee, his assistant secretary John O’Donovan, and outgoing senior club chairman John Furey.
|
| 10/01/2012 | We then had the chairman’s address from John Furey. This was John’s last address as chairman, as he was not letting his name go forward for the chair in 2012. John thanked the coaching staff of the intermediate hurlers and footballers for their efforts during the year, and all the coaches who helped out at juvenile level. He also commented on the U21 championship, and the unsatisfactory state of affairs that arose from the existing competition structures which sees a relatively small number of matches taking most of the year to play. It was noted also that the club is seeing the effects of the economic downturn, with loss of players due to emigration now very much a concern for the club. Jerry Mullane, who is stepping down as organiser of the weekly cards-playing events, was thanked for all his work in making this valuable social event possible. Gerry McNamara was congratulated on his appointment as child protection officer for the county.
These addresses were then followed by the election of officials. The biggest change from last year sees Kevin O’Hagan step in as club chairman to succeed John Furey. Kevin comes in on the back of a hugely successful year in chairing and driving forward the work of the Coaching and Games committee, which he somehow managed to discharge along with his roles as head coach for U8 football, coach for U8 hurling and 10K Run organiser. We wish him every success, and would encourage everyone in the club to support him in his chairmanship. His first act as chairman was to pay a heartfelt tribute to outgoing chairman John Furey, who has worked tirelessly for the club over the last few years and under whose leadership the strategic plan was adopted and implemented. Maurice Walsh, Ger Synnott, John Page and Gerry McNamara were approved to continue as secretary, treasurer, PRO and registrar respectively. Denis McCarthy continues as irish officer and senior pitch co-ordinator, while Trish O’Doherty takes on the newly-created office of club child protection officer. Pa O’Brien was elected County Board Rep, narrowly defeating Noel Downey in the only election of the evening. Pa also continues as club president. Tony McMahon and John Rice continue as the club reps to the city board and the football board respectively. Regarding the representatives from the various committees, Jim O’Connor was confirmed as field committee rep, Ray Dowling as hurling rep to the C&G committee, and Mick O’Callaghan as football rep. The player reps for hurling and football are Dave Bulfin and Eoghan Rice respectively. Finally, Gerry McNamara has stepped down as the facilities and dev representative, and will be replaced by John Furey.
The meeting finished by considering a number of motions. Motions were passed to adopt revised codes of practice for players, coaches and members. A motion to provide a modest subsidy towards club gear for all underage players was passed, with the details to be fine-tuned by the finance committee. Other motions passed concerned the co-ordination of purchasing across all sections of the club, establishing a common registration process, end-of-season debriefs for all teams, expanded use of the hall, and the formal appointment of a player retention officer were passed.
We would like to thank everyone who took the time to attend the AGM, and would like to wish everyone all the best for the new year. |
| 10/01/2012 Club notes 10/01/2012 | The Mungret Senior Club AGM took place on the evening of 8 January 2012 at the clubhouse. The AGM was preceeded by mass at Mungret church at 12:30 for deceased members of the club. The re-invigoration of the club at all levels, thanks to the strategic plan that was launched almost a year ago, was reflected in the attendance of just under one hundred members, the largest turnout for an AGM in many years. Maurice Walsh delivered the secretary’s report, during which he highlighted the achievements of the club on and off the field during 2011, with particular reference to the work of the various sub-committees established under the strategic plan. While it was a year of modest attainment on the field for Mungret, there were some highlights, most notably the success of the ladies footballers in winning the intermediate championship, and the success of the intermediate hurlers in winning the county cup at the expense of Blackrock, who defeated us heavily in the league stage of the championship. Maurice also pointed out a couple of interesting statistics, in that we were the highest scoring team in the intermediate hurling league, and that we scored more goals than anyone in the championship, so there was no shortage of firepower in the team. From the coaching viewpoint, we now have 18 qualifies L1 coaches in the club, plus another 13 who have taken L0 certification, which is a great base on which to build as we develop our teams into the future. Maurice also commented on the success of the Croke Park Group pass, which allows families, through the clubs, to travel to matches at headquarters at greatly reduced rates. Maurice finished by congratulating the many players who represented limerick at different levels throughout the year, and by thanking everyone who contributed to the club during the year.
This was followed by the treasurers’ report from Ger Synnott, and it was great to be able to report that the club finances are in a reasonably healthy state, even allowing for the many investments in infrastructure and facilities that we made during the year. |
| 04/01/2012 Club Notes 4 January 2012 | | Happy new year to everyone. The AGM of Mungret St Pauls Senior GAA Club will take place at 6pm on Sunday 8th January in the GAA Clubhouse. Mass for deceased members will be at 12.30p.m. on the same day in Raheen Church. The AGM gives an opportunity to look back on the many activities that took place during 2011 and to plan for 2012. In 2011 we launched the 5 year Strategic Plan and many improvements have taken place in the area of Facilities, Coaching, Fundraising, Communications and Structures during 2011. We also had success on the playing field with the winning of the County Intermediate Cup and City titles at U21 hurling, Junior B hurling and Junior A football. At the AGM there will be a number of changes in Officers and we invite all players, members and supporters to attend this very important meeting. |
